Ethical Dilemmas and the CFO

Summary:

The chief financial officer must be the most ethical person in his or her company.  Each stakeholder of a company – employee, investor, management, customers, suppliers, and the greater community – relies on the CFO for integrity and transparency. As such, it is not surprising that the CFOs are more likely than other employees to face ethical dilemmas in the course of executing their responsibilities.  This program, which will be directed by a professor of ethics, will examine three real-life dilemmas faced by chief financial officers, focusing on the ethical quandary, alternatives faced, decisions made, and the final outcome.  This program will have heavy audience participation.

This program will offer two CPE credits in the area of ethics.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this course, you should be able to:

Ø Define business ethics, and apply this definition to business decisions in a thoughtful and pragmatic manner.

Ø Appreciate the “gray” ethical areas that are routinely faced by financial executives and the processes they undergo to arrive at their decisions.

Ø Understand how financial executives analyze ethical quandaries, and balance the needs of all stakeholders to arrive at a decision that is consistent with ethical standards, law, regulations, accounting and business standards, and community standards .

Ø  Apply real life lessons to ethical decision you will have to make in leading your organizations.

Ø Improve your ability to communicate ethical challenges to your constituents, and inspire their confidence in your ability to represent their interests in a consistent, fair, and ethical manner.

Program Content:

This will be a “case study” format discussion.  Three CFOs in the room will present real life career experiences that presented them with ethical dilemmas in executing their responsibilities.  The conversation will be directed by a professor of ethics from Babson College, and all audience members will be encouraged to participate.
